The Shame Madonna embodies a tension between devotion and
exposure. By vertically stretching and distorting the traditional
figure, the work exaggerates her vulnerable posture and transforms
an established religious image into something increasingly
unfamiliar. It questions how ideas of shame, modesty and devotion
change when the cultural context surrounding the image
disappears.
